Golf’s Greatest Tournament, The Masters, Starts In April

With all the drama occurring in the world of golf today, The Masters may be the exact thing golf requires to bring back the prestige and honor to the game. The Masters, held in Augusta, Georgia, has always been a favorite for sports fans, holding legendary playoffs and triumphs.

It was at The Masters that Phil Mickelson won his first tournament, that “The Shark”, Greg Norman, had his epic collapse and where Tiger Woods first rose to greatness. The coveted green jacket has been worn by the best golfers in the world, from Jack Nicklaus, who won it six times, to Arnold Palmer, Phil and Tiger.

After his latest scandal of spitting on the green, many critics are hoping Tiger Woods, who has already won four green jackets, will rise up again and show his dominance in the sport. Yet others are predicting that this is the year which Phil Mickelson, who has previously won three green jackets , to tie Tiger. Phil has recently had a few bad years himself but is hoping that in 2011 he’ll jump up the player rankings.

While the golf schedule is sometimes difficult on players, most major hopefuls will take some time off before The Masters to improve their swing and find their focus. Being the first Major tournament of the year, The Masters, many say, sets the stage for how golfers will perform during the year. Often players who do well in tournaments have trouble in the Majors, and The Masters, being in April, shows who has the iron nerves to be victorious in golf with the world watching.

This year the purse for winning is 7.5 million dollars and while there are a lot of golfers hoping that they’ll be hanging a green jacket in their closet come spring, only one will succeed. Regardless of the outcome, the wonder of perhaps America’s greatest tournament should be amazing to watch.
