Why All The Interest In Golf Backswing Tips?

Why is it that some golfers spend hours and hours analyzing their backswing? There are certainly a few fundamental ideas that are important if you expect to return to the ball in the proper impact position however is there really a need to pick apart the golf backswing and analyze every foot of it?

When you step back to think about it, the goal of the backswing is simply to store-up power to be released on the downswing while staying balanced and in control. The question then becomes what is the best way to achieve this?

Many golfers buy into the old “low and slow” adage. Now there are definitely some golfers who are prone to jerking the club back quickly for whom this advice can be useful but there are many golfers who probably sabotage their backswing by following this a little too literally. If you force yourself to keep the club very low to the ground during the first foot or two of your backswing there is a very good chance that you will sway backwards away from the target rather than rotating properly. The second part of this well known piece of advice, the slow part, can result in over-swinging and also may cause you to begin the downswing with a lunging motion. It’s also worth mentioning that everyone has a different temperament and forcing a highly energetic person to swing too slowly will not be beneficial.

This is not to say that a simple swing thought is not a good idea. There are two swing thoughts, really golf swing basics in fact, that should really help you ingrain a proper backswing.

Perhaps the best thing the average golfer can do is not try to imitate the pros. Professional golfers spend a great deal of time doing golf-specific exercises and stretching while the average golfer does very little of this. Is it then realistic to expect to be able to achieve the same positions as the pros? To do this most golfers will have to “cheat”. They will have to dip shoulders and knees, change their spine angle, lift the club rather than swinging it – in short nothing good will come of it.

So how does the average golfer avoid over-swinging and get the club in a good position at the top of the backswing? A good key to focus on is to try to move the arms, shoulders and chest in one piece. If you do this while keeping your spine at the same tilt throughout the swing and not swaying off of the ball you will be in good shape. The key thought is to stop moving, what ends up really being lifting, the arms as soon as your chest and shoulders have achieved their maximum rotation.

In fact you may find that your full swing is in fact more like a three-quarters swing and that is perfectly alright. If you are concerned about lack of power you will more than make up for it by hitting the ball solidly. A good drill to help make sure you don’t over-swing is to place a golf-glove under your right armpit and make sure it does not fall out at any time during your backswing. Try these backswing tips, focussing on swinging within yourself and you may be surprised at the results.
