Want To Know How To Correct A Slice?
Have You Been Spending Too Much Time in the Woods Lately?
Okay, you know the drill. You get up to the first hole, put your ball on the tee and get the club back and swing as hard as you can and there goes a wicked slice off into the woods. While your buddies are off walking down the fairway you’re somewhere in the woods looking for your ball. You tell yourself that this is not going to happen again. But two holes later you’re playing in the woods again. Just what went wrong and how are you going to fix this slice?
Here’s What Went Wrong?
First, if you are only slicing the ball on a few occasions then you have no big worries about how to correct a slice because it happens to most people. But if your the golfer who believes all golf courses must turn right all the time then you might want to pay attention here. When the golf ball is struck in a manner that makes the ball spin horizontally you get a slice. This occurs when the face of the club is hitting the ball while it is in the open position. The very first thing to do is make sure the face of the club is square and not open as it hits the ball. How do we get the golf club to be in the square position?
You Might Be Holding Me Too Tight!
The way you grip your club can be tricky and also cause a problem. Holding it too easy or too tightly can be the trouble. You have to hold it just right, in this case that would be a firm grip. A club is like a handshake in that you don’t want to break it but you don’t want to be wimpy. Having a firm grip allows the club head to return to a square face on impact. Really the hands have an easy job when playing golf; they just need to hold the club. You don’t want your hands roaming all over the place because you never know where they’ll end up.
That Is Some Grip You Have There!
Determining how to correct a slice could lie in your grip on the golf club.If the position for your hands on the club is wrong then this could be your problem for slicing. When you are gripping the club, check to see how many knuckles are looking back at you. If you are a right handed golfer, you should be seeing 2 knuckles on your left hand. You are looking at your right hand if you are left handed. If you do not see 2 knuckles then you need to rotate your hand, not the club, until you see these knuckles. Your left thumb (right for lefties) should be staring down the very top of the golf shaft.
When you are standing in a normal stance you should be seeing a “V” between your index finger and thumb on the right hand. The opposite hand applies for lefties. The “V” should be looking at your right shoulder. If it is not then you have to adjust your position. Simply making these minor alterations for the golf grip have often eliminated the golfer’s slice.
Follow Your Mental Checklist
So the next time you golf and go to address the ball, check the position of your hands on the club and remember to relax your grip. Keep your head down on the ball and use your hips. Let your club do the heavy work and not your arms. So now that you know how to correct a slice your only problem is that you won’t be spending so much time with your friends in the woods.
