The skull and the chunker, are two of the major problems when it comes to chipping. If you have had the pleasure of hitting either of these shots, you know how frustrating it can be.
The chunker is when you hit the ball fat and then it usually goes only for a short distance. If you gave hit your chip shot clear past the pin, you have skulled your shot.
Believe it or not, these shots are both caused by hitting up on the ball. You will catch more ground when hitting a chunker. If you hit the ball in the center or equator, you will skull your shot.
Now let’s look at the solutions to these problems.
You need to mentally prepare yourself, not only for your chip shots but, all your shots. Most golfers will fear they are going to mis-hit the ball and either come up way short or overshoot of the pin. You need to remain calm, these are shots that can be made easily.
You must follow through with your swing, when hitting chip shots. To avoid hitting the ball to hard, shorten your backswing.
If you shorten your backswing, you will have more control of the club, which in turn, will give you better control of your chip shot. You must also, accelerate your club as you start your downswing.
The next chipping golf tip is crucial to your success. Select a target on the green, to aim at when chipping. To be successful, you need to hit a low shot, and roll it to the pin. The exceptions are, if you need to hit your ball over and object or bunker.
You will also need to re-evaluate your swing and get rid of any bad habits you may have picked up during the years. Spend some time at the driving range, re-learning the proper techniques and swing mechanics for hitting chip shots.
When hitting chip shots, try to hit down on the ball and do not scoop the ball, as this will not work. Otherwise, you will not be able to control the shot.
You must practice your chip shots, as often as you go to the driving range. Mastering the chip shot will dramatically lower your scores.
